I have a tradition my students write a letter of advice on the last day of school which my new students read on the first day of school. This year I saw the following comments in the letters, which show kids getting the main things I want them to get:
"I write this letter in hopes that you'll take my loyal advice on how to get through sixth grade successfully. First of all, that man standing in the front of the classroom is named Mr. Smart."
D. Ohira
"Mr. Smart plays some mean guitar."
M. Mahoney
"Be clear and specific on your writing. Try your hardest and don't be too stressed. If you need help, your teachers and friends will be there for you."
J. Lee
"There are a lot of things that are really helpful that you need to save your life in sixth grade. Don't procrastinate! If you do, you will die."
C. Sonido
"You will love sixth grade if you remember a few things. Don't put off your long term projects. Ask about things you don't understand. Make sure that your write down the homework every day in your planner before you go home. Smile!"
K. Karasaki
"First of all, the reason you are totally groovy is that you're reading my letter. This year you have many long term projects. Wax Museum, 20th Century Project, Inventions, Stock market, etc. You will do a lot of public speaking. This year you have a new best friend, (drum roll please), your planner. Young sixth grader, you will survive this year! Paint the town red!"
