The Pacific Aviation Museum is on Ford Island, the center of the attack on Oahu on December 7, 1941. Today Laurie Ching and I took our classes for a visit, possibly the first by anyone from Punahou. The museum is brand new. We came back all excited about what our students experienced.
They flew planes in the flight simulators. They walked around the giant hangers of Ford Island that still have the bullet holes in them from the day of the attack. The docents were excellent; they were energetic and informed, being pilots and educators themselves. Several students, including many girls, saw the possibilities of learning to fly when they grow up.
All in all, an excellent field trip. Laurie and I will recommend it to the other sixth grade classes. It would be great to go every year.
